An independent guide to choosing the right Bali YTT for you
Bali draws more aspiring yoga teachers each year than any other destination in the world. The combination of Ubud's centuries-old spiritual heritage, a stable warm climate year-round, the affordability of immersive residential programs, and the gentle pace of village life make it an ideal place to step away from daily routine and study yoga full-time.
This guide covers the practical questions we answer most often at our school in Ubud: what a Yoga Alliance certified training actually costs in Bali, whether to train in Ubud, Canggu or Seminyak, which visa fits your course length, when to come, and how to tell a serious school from a holiday operation. Whether you train with us or elsewhere, the checklist below will help you choose well.
Across Bali, a Yoga Alliance certified 200-hour residential training typically costs between USD 1,200 and USD 2,700 including accommodation and meals. The table below compares the main paths available (prices shown are Bali Yoga Retreats' current fees, from the shared-room rate; every fee includes accommodation and daily vegetarian meals):
| Program | Duration | Certification | From (USD) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 200 Hour Multi-Style YTT | 20 days | RYT-200 | 1,274 | Beginners and first-time teachers |
| 300 Hour Multi-Style YTT | 25 days | RYT-500 (with a prior 200hr) | 1,424 | RYT-200 graduates deepening their practice |
| 500 Hour Multi-Style YTT | 55 days | RYT-500 | 2,249 | Full immersion in one stay |
| 200 Hour Kundalini YTT | 20 days | RYT-200 | 1,299 | Energy work, kriyas and meditation focus |
| 300 Hour Kundalini YTT | 25 days | RYT-500 (with a prior 200hr) | 1,599 | Advanced Kundalini specialization |
| 500 Hour Kundalini YTT | 55 days | RYT-500 | 2,599 | Complete Kundalini certification |
| Online 200 Hour YTT | Self-paced (~6 months) | Yoga Alliance approved | 299 | Studying from home, flexible schedule |
| 6 Day Yoga Retreat | 6 days | Non-certification | 650 | Trying immersive practice before a YTT |
Yoga teacher training in Bali costs between USD 1,200 and USD 2,700 for a Yoga Alliance certified 200-hour course (20 days), inclusive of shared or private accommodation and vegetarian meals. Specialized courses (Kundalini, Ayurveda, Yin) range from USD 499 to USD 2,400 depending on duration and room type. Advanced 300-hour and master-level 500-hour certifications add USD 600 to USD 2,000 to the base price.
Room type is the biggest price lever: at Bali Yoga Retreats a 200-hour training costs USD 1,274 in a 6-shared room versus USD 2,024 in a private room. Budget beyond tuition for your flight, travel insurance, visa fees, and personal spending — day-to-day costs in Ubud (laundry, snacks, scooter rental, cafés) are low by Western standards.
Both paths lead to the same Yoga Alliance RYT credential at the 200, 300 and 500 hour levels — the difference is what you study and who you become as a teacher.
| Multi-Style YTT | Kundalini YTT | |
|---|---|---|
| Core practice | Hatha, Ashtanga and Vinyasa asana, alignment, sequencing | Kriyas, chakra theory, mantra chanting, mudras, bandhas, Kundalini awakening practices |
| Feels like | Physical, structured, posture-led with meditation and pranayama woven in | Meditative, energetic, breath- and mantra-led with asana in service of energy work |
| Career path | Teaching general classes in studios and gyms worldwide — the broadest job market | Specialist Kundalini classes, meditation and breathwork offerings — a smaller but far less crowded niche |
| Choose it if | You want maximum versatility from your first certification | You are drawn to the subtle, inner dimension of yoga and want to stand out as a specialist |
Still unsure? Many of our students take the Multi-Style 200 hour first for breadth, then return for a Kundalini 300 hour to specialize — the two combine into an RYT-500. Explore the 200 Hour Multi-Style YTT and the 200 Hour Kundalini YTT curricula side by side.
Yes — and Bali is one of the friendliest places in the world to start. A 200-hour training is a foundation course by design: no teaching experience is required, and the curriculum is taught from the roots up, covering asana, pranayama, meditation, anatomy, philosophy and teaching methodology. At our school, classes run in small cohorts of 15–20 students, English is the language of instruction (and a second language for many students), and teachers provide modifications for every level of practice.
Two honest recommendations for beginners: build a regular personal practice in the weeks before you arrive so the daily schedule feels energizing rather than overwhelming, and consider the 6 Day Yoga Retreat first if you want to experience immersive practice before committing to a full certification course.
Ubud is Bali's cultural and spiritual capital and the island's traditional home of yoga education. Set inland among rice terraces, river valleys and temple compounds, it offers a quieter rhythm of life, a long-established community of practitioners, and easy access to healers, sound baths and ceremony culture. Most residential, lineage-oriented teacher trainings — including ours, on Jl. Bisma — are based here, because the environment supports early mornings, study and reflection.
Canggu, on the southwest coast, is Bali's surf-and-digital-nomad hub. Its yoga scene skews toward modern vinyasa, fitness-oriented classes and drop-in studios, with a lively café and nightlife culture. It suits students who want beach life around their training and don't mind more traffic and stimulation.
Seminyak is primarily a beach-resort and shopping district. You'll find hotel yoga classes and boutique studios, but few dedicated residential teacher-training campuses.
In short: choose Ubud for immersion, tradition and focus; Canggu for surf and a social, modern scene; Seminyak for a holiday with yoga on the side rather than a certification environment.
Most nationalities can enter Indonesia on a 30-day Visa on Arrival (VOA), extendable once for another 30 days without leaving the country. That comfortably covers a 200-hour training (20 days) or a 300-hour training (25 days), including a few days of travel either side. For longer stays — such as the 55-day 500-hour programs, or back-to-back courses — the B211A Social-Cultural visa, applied for before travel, allows an initial 60-day stay extendable up to 180 days and removes the time pressure of an in-country extension.
| Course | Length on the ground | Recommended visa |
|---|---|---|
| 200 Hour YTT | 20 days | 30-day Visa on Arrival |
| 300 Hour YTT | 25 days | 30-day Visa on Arrival |
| 500 Hour YTT | 55 days | VOA + one extension, or B211A for a comfortable buffer |
| 6 Day Retreat | 6 days | 30-day Visa on Arrival |
Visa rules change — always confirm current requirements for your nationality with the Indonesian embassy or the official immigration website before booking flights. If your application needs supporting documentation about your course, contact us after enrolling and we will help with the paperwork.
Bali sits eight degrees south of the equator, so it is warm all year — the real variable is rain.
| Season | Months | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Dry season | May – September | Sunny days, cooler nights, stable weather — the most popular YTT period. Book earlier; Ubud is busiest in July–August. |
| Shoulder | April & October | A good balance: mostly dry, fewer visitors, easier bookings. |
| Rainy season | November – March | Short, heavy afternoon downpours rather than all-day rain. Lush green landscapes, fewer tourists, and quieter courses. Indoor shalas keep training unaffected. |
Courses at established Ubud schools run year-round — our own trainings start every month — so the best time is ultimately the one that fits your life. If you want postcard weather, aim for May to September; if you want a quieter, greener, more inward experience, the rainy season has its own magic.
We are, of course, one of the schools you could choose — so here is the factual case, and you can verify every part of it independently. Bali Yoga Retreats is a Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga School (RYS 200, 300 and 500) operating in Ubud since 2015, based on Jl. Bisma in the heart of town. The school was founded by Yogi Vishnu Panigrahi (E-RYT 500), who holds master's degrees in Sanskrit and Yoga, taught for nine years at the Swami Rama Institute, and teaches in the Himalayan tradition he has practiced for more than 25 years. Courses run in small cohorts of 15–20 students, every named teacher has a public bio on our teachers page, and fees include accommodation and daily vegetarian meals with no hidden extras. We have trained 1,000+ teachers, and our reviews are on Google Maps, Trustpilot and TripAdvisor where we cannot edit them.
